Polish Vodkas

First, let's list the brands of Polish vodkas that are available in various Washington area stores.  They are:

If you didn't know what to ask for when you wanted to buy a bottle of Polish vodka, now you know.  There are really many more Polish vodka brands, but that's a good start.

Here are some Polish vodka Web sites:

Tasting Them

Belvedere, Chopin and Shakespeare are rather expensive, comparatively speaking, but they've gained quite a following in the U.S., especially in the high-end market, among lawyers and other professional types.  These vodkas are considered both very smooth and very elegant, because of their elaborate multi-stage distillation process, but also because of their top-of-the-line price and great-looking designer bottles.  As such, they make good gifts.  People have Belvedere and Chopin straight up, on the rocks and as the basis for mixed drinks, such as Cosmopolitan.  You can find Belvedere and Chopin at liquor stores throughout the metropolitan area, including the Comet.

Luksusowa, which stands for "luxurious," is also a well-known and highly respected brand.  Luksusowa, also carried by the Comet, sells in more traditionally-looking bottles, but it's less expensive.

Building Demand

It's all a matter of demand.  "I carry what the public asks me for," said the owner of a small liquor store in Georgetown when I noticed that she carries Zubrowka and Wyborowa.  She didn't even realize those two vodkas were made in Poland.  Assume that your local store owner will agree to sell what you want.

Being Good

Please remember that Polish vodkas are meant to be savored in moderation.  Friends don't let friends drink and drive.
